Pacific Rim’s Future Takes a Surprising Turn With New Steven Spielberg Project!

Pacific Rim’s Future is taking a surprising direction as the popular monster franchise moves beyond its theatrical movies. While another big-screen sequel appears unlikely, the series is still expanding through television.

Amazon Prime Video is developing a prequel series set within the Pacific Rim universe. The project has Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer attached, giving fans a new reason to return to the world of Kaiju and Jaegers.

Pacific Rim’s Future Moves Beyond the Movies

The chances of a third Pacific Rim movie receiving a theatrical release currently appear very low. The franchise has struggled to maintain the box office momentum needed for another major theatrical installment.

The original movie arrived in 2013 and earned a strong following for its massive battles between giant monsters and equally enormous robots. However, the 2018 sequel failed to match the original’s impact. Guillermo del Toro did not return as director for Pacific Rim: Uprising. Instead, Steven S. DeKnight took over directing duties, while del Toro remained involved as a producer.

The change marked a major shift for the franchise. Del Toro had established the visual identity and tone of the original movie, but the sequel took the story in a different direction.

Why Guillermo del Toro Left Pacific Rim 2?

Del Toro eventually moved on to The Shape of Water, which became one of his most acclaimed films. However, the production did not align with the studio’s preferred schedule and location for Pacific Rim 2.

As a result, del Toro stepped away from directing the sequel. Steven S. DeKnight then took over the project and attempted to continue the story without del Toro behind the camera.

Although the sequel expanded the franchise’s mythology, its box office performance made another theatrical movie much harder to justify. That leaves the franchise at an interesting point. Instead of immediately returning to cinemas, the studio appears to be exploring television as the next step.

Amazon Is Developing a Pacific Rim Prequel

One of the biggest developments for Pacific Rim’s Future is Amazon Prime Video’s planned prequel television series.

The project will explore the world before the events of the original movie. Eric Heisserer, known for writing Arrival, is attached to the series. His involvement could give the franchise a strong storytelling foundation. Arrival demonstrated Heisserer’s ability to combine large-scale science fiction concepts with emotional human stories.

The prequel also gives the creators an opportunity to explore parts of the Pacific Rim mythology that the movies could only briefly introduce.

The Kaiju and Jaegers Remain at the Center

Pacific Rim’s Future still has plenty of material to explore because the franchise’s central concept remains simple but visually powerful. The original Pacific Rim follows humanity’s battle against enormous creatures called Kaiju. These monsters emerge from the sea and threaten cities around the world.

Humanity responds by creating massive robots called Jaegers. These machines require two pilots to operate because their systems connect the pilots’ minds through a neural bridge. As the Kaiju attacks become increasingly dangerous, the world struggles to keep its defenses intact.

The original movie follows a washed-up former Jaeger pilot and an inexperienced trainee who are brought together to operate a legendary machine that appears outdated. The unlikely duo eventually becomes humanity’s last hope against the growing apocalypse.

Could the Prequel Revive the Franchise?

The television series could give Pacific Rim’s Future a chance to rebuild interest in the franchise without the enormous expectations of another theatrical blockbuster. A prequel can also expand the mythology without immediately needing to continue the stories from the previous movies. It could explore earlier Kaiju attacks, the development of the Jaeger program, or other events that shaped humanity’s fight.

However, Amazon has yet to reveal major story details for the series. Casting, a release date, and further production information remain unknown. For now, fans will have to wait and see whether the television project can successfully bring the Pacific Rim universe back into the spotlight.

What’s Next for Pacific Rim?

Pacific Rim’s Future may not involve another theatrical sequel anytime soon, but the franchise is far from finished. With Amazon developing a prequel series and Eric Heisserer attached, the property has an opportunity to explore its world in greater depth.

A successful television series could eventually create enough momentum for the franchise to return to theaters. Until then, the next chapter of Pacific Rim appears to be heading to the small screen rather than the big screen.
