Ian McKellen’s Gandalf Returns in First Look at The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum!

Ian McKellen’s return as Gandalf has received its first major look in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. A new behind-the-scenes video shows the legendary actor fully transformed into Gandalf during production.

Ian McKellen’s Return as Gandalf Brings Back an Iconic Character

Ian McKellen’s return as Gandalf marks another chapter in his long history with Middle-earth. McKellen first played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001. He later returned for The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The actor also reprised the role throughout The Hobbit trilogy. His appearance in The Hunt for Gollum marks his first big-screen performance as Gandalf in more than a decade.

Tolkien Universe shared the footage on X, revealing McKellen in the character’s familiar appearance. He wears Gandalf’s signature long gray beard and hair after completing hair and makeup. The footage also confirms that production on the upcoming Middle-earth movie is currently underway.

The Hunt for Gollum Is Now in Production

Andy Serkis directs The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and also returns as Gollum, also known as Sméagol. Warner Bros. previously released behind-the-scenes footage showing Serkis wearing a motion-capture suit during production.

The new Gandalf footage now provides another glimpse at the movie’s return to the world established by Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films.

Elijah Wood and Lee Pace Return

The upcoming film also features several familiar faces. Elijah Wood reprises his role as Frodo Baggins, while Lee Pace returns as Thranduil. Both actors previously appeared in the Middle-earth film series. Their involvement adds further connections to the earlier movies. However, details about how their characters fit into the new story remain limited.

Jamie Dornan Plays a Younger Aragorn

Jamie Dornan joins the cast as Strider, a younger version of Aragorn. Viggo Mortensen originally portrayed Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Dornan will now portray the character during an earlier period of his life. Leo Woodall also stars as a new character named Halvard. Meanwhile, Kate Winslet joins the cast as Marigol.

Andy Serkis Directs and Returns as Gollum

Serkis is taking on both sides of the camera for The Hunt for Gollum. The actor returns as Gollum while also directing the film. His long history with the character gives the project a direct connection to one of Middle-earth’s most recognizable figures. Arty Papageorgiou, Phoebe Gittins, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens wrote the screenplay. Walsh and Boyens previously worked on the original The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies.

The First Look Keeps the Story Under Wraps

The new footage focuses on McKellen’s transformation rather than revealing major plot details. Still, Ian McKellen’s return as Gandalf confirms that the iconic wizard will play a role in the upcoming Middle-earth adventure.

The appearance also raises questions about how Gandalf will fit into a story centered on Gollum and the events surrounding the character. For now, Warner Bros. has kept most story details under wraps.

When Will The Hunt for Gollum Be Released?

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027. With production now underway, more official footage and details are expected to emerge as the movie moves closer to its theatrical release.

For fans of Middle-earth, Ian McKellen’s return as Gandalf provides one of the clearest signs yet that the new film is reconnecting with the beloved characters and performers from the original franchise.
