Masters of the Universe Gets Early Streaming Release After Box Office Struggles!

Masters of the Universe is heading to streaming much sooner than many fans expected. The live-action reboot received a positive response from critics and longtime fans of the original animated franchise. However, its theatrical performance failed to meet expectations.

Now, audiences will soon get another chance to watch the film from home. Following its theatrical run, the movie is making a fast move to streaming, which could play an important role in its future.

Masters of the Universe Makes a Fast Move to Streaming

Amazon MGM has announced that the live-action reboot will arrive on Prime Video following its theatrical run.

The move gives the film an opportunity to reach a much larger audience. In particular, fans who were hesitant to buy a theatrical ticket can now discover the reboot from home.

Additionally, the streaming release could play an important role in determining the franchise’s future. If the film performs strongly on Prime Video, Amazon MGM may have another reason to consider a potential sequel.

Masters of the Universe Struggled at the Box Office

Although Masters of the Universe earned mostly positive reviews from critics, the film struggled to attract a large general audience.

The live-action reboot earned approximately $113 million worldwide during its theatrical run. Furthermore, a soft opening weekend and a “B” CinemaScore suggested that mainstream moviegoers were less enthusiastic than critics and longtime fans of the original cartoon.

Still, MGM Studios defended the film’s early performance.

MGM Studios’ Head of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, Kevin Wilson, said:

“This weekend represents a very solid start for Masters of the Universe and the passionate, multigenerational audience response we’re seeing around the world has been fantastic. Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy—building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window.”

Despite the studio’s confidence, the film’s theatrical numbers ultimately fell short of expectations.

Could Streaming Save the Masters of the Universe Franchise?

A sequel to Masters of the Universe has not yet been confirmed. However, the movie’s streaming performance could influence the future of the franchise.

If the film attracts a large audience on Prime Video, Amazon MGM could reconsider its plans for a potential follow-up. Moreover, a sequel could potentially receive a smaller budget after the first film’s disappointing box office performance.

Streaming success does not guarantee a sequel. Nevertheless, strong viewing numbers could give the franchise another opportunity.

For now, the film’s future remains uncertain.

What Is Masters of the Universe About?

The story follows Prince Adam, who returns to Eternia after being separated from his home for 15 years.

Once he arrives, Adam discovers that his world has fallen under the control of the evil Skeletor. Therefore, he must reconnect with his allies and accept his destiny as He-Man.

The official synopsis reads:

“In MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, Director Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe.”

The film combines fantasy, action, and adventure while bringing the iconic animated property into live action.
