Michael Jackson Biopic Runtime Revealed — Shorter Than Expected!

Fans of the King of Pop have received a major update on the Michael Jackson biopic ahead of its April 24 release. Surprisingly, the film will be shorter than many initially expected.

According to scooper Cryptic HD Quality on X, the movie is now expected to run just a few minutes over the two-hour mark, specifically between 2 hours, 5 minutes and 2 hours, 10 minutes. Previously, platforms like Letterboxd (via MJ Friends) listed the runtime at 2 hours, 16 minutes, making the new estimate noticeably shorter.

For context, other major musician biopics, such as Bohemian Rhapsody, ran for 2 hours, 30 minutes, highlighting the scale difference between productions. The film stars Jaafar Jackson, nephew of Michael Jackson, marking his acting debut as the legendary performer.

Shorter Runtime: What Fans Can Expect

Despite being shorter than initially projected, the film promises to deliver a condensed and impactful storytelling experience. Transitioning through key milestones in Jackson’s life, the first installment reportedly concludes with Jackson leaving the Jackson 5 after the release of his first solo album, Off the Wall.

The production team, led by Lionsgate, conducted 22 days of reshoots in June 2025, focusing on scenes that would expand the first film to feature length. These additional scenes are said to include some of Jackson’s early struggles in the music industry, highlighting his ambition and creative genius.

Moreover, the filmmakers have reportedly emphasized iconic performance recreations, including rehearsals for the Motown 25 “Billie Jean” performance, to capture Jackson’s legendary stage presence authentically. Fans can expect carefully choreographed sequences that honor the King of Pop’s legacy.

The Two-Part Plan Behind Michael Jackson

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer revealed during a Q4 2025 earnings call (via Variety) that the filmmakers initially captured 3.5 hours of footage. To avoid an excessively long single installment, there were discussions about splitting the story into two films.

A potential sequel remains uncertain. Reports suggest that as of May 2025, Michael 2 did not yet have a script, and Lionsgate may wait for box office performance before confirming a follow-up.

Interestingly, industry insiders hint that if a second installment is greenlit, it could cover Jackson’s later career, including his Dangerous and HIStory eras, as well as behind-the-scenes struggles, giving fans a comprehensive cinematic journey.

The biopic also faces legal complications due to previously filmed material involving Jackson’s 1993 accuser, Jordan Chandler. A prior settlement agreement prohibits dramatizing those allegations, which required adjustments in the storytelling.

In addition, Lionsgate reportedly ensured that all remaining content strictly adheres to verified sources, interviews, and Jackson family-approved materials, aiming to respect his legacy while delivering an authentic portrayal.

Box Office Potential

Even with a shorter runtime, Michael is widely projected to be one of 2026’s biggest box office performers, thanks to Jackson’s enduring global popularity. Fans and newcomers alike are eager to see how the film portrays the King of Pop’s journey.

With the global audience for music biopics continuing to grow, Michael could capitalize on international markets particularly in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Analysts also predict that strong streaming deals could follow its theatrical release, increasing revenue and accessibility for fans worldwide.

The casting of Jaafar Jackson adds an extra layer of authenticity and curiosity. Observers note that his physical resemblance and musical talent could make him a standout performer, elevating the biopic above other musician films.

Meanwhile, fans are also anticipating the soundtrack. Reports suggest the film will feature classic Michael Jackson hits, carefully integrated into the narrative, allowing audiences to relive iconic moments. Transitioning between dramatic storytelling and musical sequences is expected to keep the pacing dynamic and engaging.
