The Unique Story Behind District 9
Directed by Neill Blomkamp, District 9 takes place in an alternate reality where an alien race becomes stranded on Earth.
The story begins when a massive alien spacecraft appears above Johannesburg, South Africa. When authorities investigate the ship, they discover a group of malnourished insect-like aliens inside.
In order to protect the human population, the government places the aliens in a segregated settlement known as District 9. Decades later, officials partner with a powerful corporation called Multinational United (MNU) to relocate the alien population outside the city.
During this relocation mission, MNU bureaucrat Wikus van de Merwe accidentally comes into contact with a mysterious alien fluid.
Soon after, his body begins transforming into an alien. Because of this change, the authorities turn against him and begin hunting him down. Consequently, Wikus is forced to flee and hide within District 9 itself.
How District 9 Became a Sci-Fi Success
District 9 marked the feature directorial debut of Neill Blomkamp. The film was based on his 2005 short film Alive in Joburg, which explored similar themes.
Blomkamp wrote the screenplay alongside Terri Tatchell. Meanwhile, the movie was produced by Peter Jackson, the filmmaker best known for The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Interestingly, the project came together after an attempt to develop a film based on the Halo franchise failed. Jackson had originally hoped to adapt the game for the big screen, but the movie was eventually canceled.
Instead, he helped transform Blomkamp’s short film into the feature-length District 9.
District 9’s Box Office and Critical Success
The movie premiered at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2009. Shortly afterward, it opened in U.S. theaters on August 14, 2009. Despite having a relatively modest $30 million budget, the film became a major hit. In fact, it earned $210.8 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable sci-fi films of its year.
Critics also praised the film heavily. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a 90% Tomatometer score and an 82% audience score.
Moreover, the film received four nominations at the 82nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Because of its success, District 9 remains widely regarded as one of the most influential modern science-fiction films.
