Prime Video Cancels Another Major Superhero Series After Gen V!

The Spider-Noir Cancellation has delivered another major blow to superhero fans. Prime Video has canceled Spider-Noir after just one season, ending Nicolas Cage’s first regular television series role despite the show earning strong reviews and major awards recognition.

The decision comes as a surprise because the series quickly became one of Prime Video’s most acclaimed superhero projects. However, behind the scenes, several factors reportedly made a second season difficult to justify.

Spider-Noir Cancellation Ends Nicolas Cage’s Superhero Role

Nicolas Cage led Spider-Noir as Ben Reilly, a struggling private investigator operating in 1930s New York.

Unlike most superhero stories, the series presented Ben as the city’s sole superhero while combining noir detective storytelling with Marvel mythology. The unusual setting and Cage’s performance helped the show stand out from other comic book adaptations.

However, Prime Video has now decided not to continue the story beyond its first season. The Spider-Noir Cancellation also means Cage’s first regular television role comes to an end much sooner than fans expected.

Spider-Noir Earned Strong Reviews

One of the biggest surprises surrounding the cancellation is the series’ critical reception. Spider-Noir earned a 92% critics score and an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Those numbers positioned the series as one of the better-reviewed superhero shows available on streaming.

Furthermore, the series received significant recognition from the television industry. Spider-Noir earned 11 Emmy nominations in 2026, making it the most-nominated Prime Video series that year. The show had also already secured multiple wins. That level of awards recognition makes the decision to cancel the series even more unexpected.

Spider-Noir Started Strong on Prime Video

The series also made an impressive debut on the streaming charts. According to Nielsen’s U.S. Top 10 rankings for original series, Spider-Noir opened at No. 2, generating 851 million viewing minutes during its first week.

Over its first six weeks, the series accumulated approximately 2.6 billion viewing minutes among U.S. audiences, according to Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings via Deadline. Those numbers show that the series attracted a substantial audience. However, initial interest did not necessarily translate into sustained momentum.

Why Prime Video Canceled Spider-Noir?

According to reports, Spider-Noir struggled to maintain the momentum it generated during its debut. The series reportedly dropped out of Prime Video’s daily Top 10 faster than recent hits such as Reacher and Ride Or Die. While the show still attracted viewers, its performance reportedly became less consistent as the weeks passed. Production costs may have also played an important role.

The series required filming both color and black-and-white versions of its scenes. That approach matched the show’s distinctive visual identity, but it also increased the production workload. Consequently, Prime Video reportedly had to weigh the cost of another season against the show’s long-term viewing performance.

The Cancellation Does Not Leave a Major Cliffhanger

Despite the disappointing news, viewers may get some consolation from how the first season concluded. The first season largely completed its story, meaning the Spider-Noir Cancellation does not leave audiences facing a major unresolved cliffhanger.

That gives the series a more complete ending than many canceled streaming shows receive. Although fans may still want to see what happens next to Ben Reilly, the existing season can stand on its own as a finished story.

Sony and Amazon Still Have Marvel Plans

The cancellation does not signal the end of the relationship between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television. The companies are expected to continue working together, with multiple projects involving Sony’s Marvel characters still in development.

Therefore, while Spider-Noir has reached its end, Sony’s Marvel properties still have a future on Prime Video and other platforms. The partnership could eventually produce another superhero series with a different character, setting, or creative approach.

Spider-Noir Cancellation Marks a Surprising End

The Spider-Noir Cancellation remains a particularly surprising decision considering everything the series accomplished. It combined Nicolas Cage’s unusual take on Ben Reilly with a distinctive 1930s setting, earned excellent Rotten Tomatoes scores, collected 11 Emmy nominations, won multiple awards, and attracted billions of viewing minutes.

Nevertheless, streaming success involves more than reviews and headline numbers. Sustaining viewership and controlling production costs can ultimately determine whether a series receives another season. For now, Spider-Noir ends after one season, leaving fans with a well-reviewed superhero noir that made a strong impression but could not secure a return.
