Buffy Reboot Cancellation Didn’t Shock Creator — Here’s Why!

The much-anticipated Buffy: New Sunnydale has officially been cancelled, leaving fans disappointed. However, director Chloé Zhao revealed that the decision did not come as a shock to her.

Speaking during the 2026 Oscars red carpet in an interview with Variety, Zhao shared her honest thoughts about the project’s fate.

Chloé Zhao Reacts to Buffy: New Sunnydale Cancellation

Addressing the cancellation, Zhao stated simply,

“I’m not surprised.”

Despite the outcome, she spoke positively about the experience of working on the reboot.

“I had an incredible time with Sarah Michelle Gellar, with the whole cast and crew doing this,”

Zhao said.

Her comments highlight the dedication of the team, even as the project faced challenges.

Staying True to the Original Buffy Legacy

According to Zhao, the creative team approached the Buffy reboot with a deep sense of responsibility.

“We, first and foremost, see ourselves as the guardians of the original show,”

she explained.

She emphasized that their goal was always to remain authentic:

“Our priority has always been to be truthful to the show and be truthful to our fans.”

Zhao added a reflective note, saying,

“Things happen for a reason, and we keep our hearts open and welcome the mystery for what this may lead us to.”

When asked if the reboot could be pitched elsewhere, she responded,

“Welcome the mystery.”

Why the Buffy Reboot Was Cancelled

Reports suggest that Hulu decided not to proceed with the Buffy reboot due to concerns over the pilot episode.

Initial feedback reportedly described the pilot as “too young” and “too small.”

Although revisions improved reception, the project ultimately failed to move forward.

The final decision came from Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group.

Behind-the-Scenes Tensions

Sarah Michelle Gellar also revealed some internal challenges during development.

She shared,

“We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series.”

This disconnect between leadership and the source material may have contributed to the reboot’s struggles.

High Expectations for the Buffy Reboot

Before its cancellation, the Buffy reboot had generated significant excitement among fans of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.

The promise of a modern revival led by an acclaimed filmmaker like Zhao raised expectations, making the cancellation even more surprising for audiences.

While the cancellation disappointed fans, Zhao’s comments suggest that the writing may have been on the wall for some time.

The Buffy reboot may be gone for now, but its legacy — and the possibility of future revivals — remains open.
