Axis Mundi vs Hollow Earth: Monsterverse Creator Breaks Down the Key Difference!
The Monsterverse continues to grow with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, offering new insights into its expanding mythology. One of the biggest revelations this season is the difference between Axis Mundi and Hollow Earth—two mysterious realms that play a major role in the franchise.
Executive producer Tory Tunnell recently explained how these concepts differ and what they mean for the future of the Monsterverse.
Full Story Breakdown
Axis Mundi Adds a New Layer to the Monsterverse
First introduced in Season 1 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Axis Mundi is not just another hidden location. Instead, it exists as a separate plane with its own unique rules.

Tunnell described Axis Mundi as:
“Almost being a cul-de-sac.”
She emphasized that Axis Mundi operates independently, functioning like its own contained space within the film.
Hollow Earth Remains the Titan Home
Meanwhile, the Hollow Earth remains a core part of the film. Previously explored in Godzilla vs. Kong, it exists beneath the Earth’s surface and serves as a natural habitat for Titans.

Unlike Axis Mundi, Hollow Earth is a physical environment where creatures like Godzilla and Kong can exist and thrive.
Key Difference: Rules and Time in the Monsterverse
A major distinction in the Monsterverse is how these two realms function.
Tunnell explained:
“Axis Mundi has its own rules… we obviously play with time dilation.”
This introduces time distortion into the film, making Axis Mundi fundamentally different from Hollow Earth. She also described it as:
“Its own zip code, if you will.”
Expanding the Monsterverse Without Breaking Canon
The creative team behind the film is focused on expanding the world while staying true to established lore.
Tunnell shared:
“There are more mysteries within our own world than we know about.”
This philosophy allows the film to grow organically while keeping fans engaged.
Balancing Titans in the Monsterverse
Season 2 also continues connections to Kong: Skull Island while introducing new Titans.
However, balancing iconic creatures is a challenge. Tunnell noted:
“Whenever you have rules, it always inspires creativity.”
She explained that keeping characters like Kong in specific locations helps maintain narrative tension and opens new storytelling opportunities.
Avoiding Overuse of Iconic Titans
Another priority for the film is avoiding overexposure of major Titans.
“We want people wanting more, rather than feeling like they’re saturated with it.”
This ensures that appearances by fan favorites remain impactful while new creatures expand the universe.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 premiered on February 27 on Apple TV+, with new episodes released weekly through May 1.
