During a recent interview with The Telegraph, Lena Headey reflected on her career and her experiences in the entertainment industry.
In particular, Headey discussed a 2017 encounter with Harvey Weinstein. She accused the former Hollywood producer of sexual harassment. According to the actress, the experience helped her become more confident about setting personal boundaries.
As a result, Headey said she felt more capable of standing up for herself. This also influenced how she approached certain scenes during her time on Game of Thrones.
“By that point I’d been through the wringer.”
Headey explained that her experiences made it easier for her to refuse pressure surrounding nude scenes.
“I could stand up for myself. I’m not saying those actresses couldn’t, but they were much younger and more vulnerable and had far less experience of being in front of people and the camera and performing.”
She continued:
“Whereas I was of an age where I’d just tit about and diffuse anything uncomfortable with idiocy.”

Headey also addressed the backlash she received after using a body double for Cersei Lannister’s infamous walk of shame in Season 5.
The storyline required Cersei to walk naked through the streets of King’s Landing while facing public humiliation. However, Rebecca Van Cleave performed the nude portion of the scene, while Headey handled the emotional and dramatic elements.
Although the decision helped Headey focus on Cersei’s emotional breakdown, some fans criticized the choice. In fact, Headey said she was shocked by the reaction.
“I was really shocked by the anger, by this idea that I’d duped the audience.”
The actress also explained why filming the entire sequence herself would have been extremely difficult.
“But by that point, everyone knew [the cast], it was insane simply going anywhere, and I was with 3000 extras.”
Headey added:
“Acting is a joy, but it requires a lot of you. I wouldn’t have been able to do the emotional part of the job; I’d have been in full-on defensive mode.”
Therefore, Headey felt that using a body double allowed her to focus on the scene’s emotional demands rather than worrying about the large crowd and intense filming environment.
Lena Headey Reflects on Expectations for Young Actresses
Elsewhere in the interview, Headey discussed the expectations placed on young female actors earlier in their careers.
According to the actress, many young performers faced pressure to take part in romantic and sexual scenes. The industry often presented these roles as a normal part of becoming a leading actress.
“There was this rite of passage all young female actors had to go through, which usually involved snogging and falling in love, and having sex and showing your boobs. They’d call them the ingenue parts, to make it sound nicer.”
Headey said she simply accepted many of those situations at the time.
“But I just got on with it.”
She also explained that she did not attend drama school. Instead, she entered the industry and learned through experience.
“I didn’t go to drama school, so I would just arrive on a set and be, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got a job.’”
However, Headey admitted that she did not always question whether she felt safe during uncomfortable moments.
“When it came to those moments, I don’t think I even questioned that I should be safe. Instead, I’d go home and cry or think, ‘Oh, that felt weird and too familiar.’”
Looking back, she now sees those experiences differently.
“Now I look back and feel, ‘Hmm, that was rough.’”
