National Treasure 3 Just Got Its Most Encouraging Update in Years!

National Treasure 3 Just Got Its Most Encouraging Update in Years!

After nearly two decades of waiting, fans finally have a meaningful update on National Treasure 3 — and it may be the most optimistic news yet.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that the film is still actively in development, offering renewed hope that the beloved adventure franchise will return to the big screen.

Jerry Bruckheimer Confirms National Treasure 3 Is “Coming Along Quite Well”

While attending the Producer’s Guild Awards in support of his PGA-nominated film F1, Bruckheimer spoke to The Direct about the status of National Treasure 3.

According to the veteran producer, the long-awaited sequel is:

“coming along quite well.”

He further added that the team is currently:

“working on the script for it.”

This confirmation marks one of the clearest signs in years that the film is steadily progressing rather than stalled in development limbo.

Nearly 20 Years Since Book of Secrets

The original films starred Nicolas Cage as historian and treasure hunter Ben Gates. The last installment, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, premiered in 2007 and left fans wondering where the story would go next.

Since then, talk of the film has surfaced repeatedly, but official confirmation remained inconsistent — until now.

With active script development underway, the possibility of seeing Ben Gates back in action feels closer than ever.

Ted Elliott Is Writing National Treasure 3

In May 2024, Bruckheimer confirmed that Ted Elliott is penning the screenplay for the film. Elliott is also attached to the next installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, another major property produced by Bruckheimer.

The involvement of an experienced franchise writer adds credibility to the sequel’s development and suggests the studio is taking the project seriously.

Later, in late 2025, Bruckheimer told The Wrap that:

“we’re getting closer.”

Those words indicate gradual but consistent forward movement for National Treasure 3.

Will Nicolas Cage and Jon Turteltaub Return?

One of the biggest questions surrounding National Treasure 3 is whether the original creative team will reunite.

Bruckheimer has previously indicated that he intends for Nicolas Cage to reprise his role as Ben Gates. He has also suggested that original director Jon Turteltaub could return to helm the sequel.

However, Cage offered a more skeptical take in 2024 during an interview with Screen Rant, stating:

“there is no National Treasure 3.”

At the time, that comment dampened expectations. But Bruckheimer’s latest remarks now suggest that progress is indeed happening behind the scenes.

Disney’s Changing Strategy and Franchise Future

Momentum for the franchise slowed after Disney canceled the 2022 spin-off series National Treasure: Edge of History following just one season.

Still, Hollywood’s ongoing wave of nostalgia-driven revivals may work in favor of National Treasure 3. Disney is currently developing sequels like The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Camp Rock 3, demonstrating continued interest in revitalizing established IP.

Given the franchise’s strong box office history and loyal fanbase, National Treasure 3 remains a logical candidate for revival.

Why National Treasure 3 Feels Closer Than Ever

This latest update matters because it confirms:

  • Active script development
  • A confirmed screenwriter
  • Continued producer involvement
  • Potential return of the original cast and director

While no official release date has been announced, the fact that National Treasure 3 is “coming along quite well” signals that fans may finally see Ben Gates uncover another historical mystery.

After nearly 20 years since Book of Secrets, hope for National Treasure 3 is stronger than it has been in years.
