Here’s Why I Am Legend Original Ending Was Scrapped After Test Audiences Reacted!

The 2007 blockbuster I Am Legend starring Will Smith became one of the most memorable post-apocalyptic films of its era. However, many fans may not know that the movie originally had a completely different ending.

In fact, the I Am Legend original ending was much darker and closer to the novel written by Richard Matheson. Nevertheless, after test audiences reacted negatively, the filmmakers decided to change it shortly before the film’s release.

I Am Legend Original Ending Was Much Darker

Originally, the film planned to follow a conclusion that closely mirrored the message of Matheson’s famous novel. Instead of ending with a heroic sacrifice, the story revealed a surprising twist about humanity and survival.

In that version, Robert Neville eventually realizes that the Darkseekers are not simply monsters. Rather, they are survivors trying to protect one of their own.

Consequently, Neville begins to understand that from their perspective, he might actually be the monster. This powerful realization forms the emotional core of the novel and was initially intended to appear in the movie as well.

Test Audiences Rejected the I Am Legend Ending Twist

However, everything changed once the film was shown to test audiences. During a recent podcast appearance, Will Smith revealed that early viewers strongly disliked the darker ending.

According to Smith, the response was extremely negative. In fact, he recalled that audiences reacted more harshly than he had ever experienced before.

“It was the only movie I’ve ever had that the audience booed,” Smith said.

The test screening reportedly included a few hundred viewers who were asked to rate the film using feedback forms ranging from “excellent” to “very poor.”

Unfortunately, the results were far from encouraging.

“It was the lowest-scoring movie I’ve ever had,” Smith explained.

Many viewers rejected the idea that Neville could be seen as the villain. Instead, they believed the Darkseekers were clearly the monsters throughout the story.

“Across the board, they were like ‘The ending is bulls—. He’s not the monster. They’re Darkseekers. They’ve been chasing them.’ We didn’t watch this whole movie to find out he’s the monster. They felt cheated,” Will Smith revealed.

The Theatrical Ending of I Am Legend

Because of the overwhelming response, the filmmakers quickly decided to change the ending. As a result, the team reshot key scenes just six weeks before the movie’s release.

The final theatrical version presents a much more traditional heroic ending. In this version, Robert Neville sacrifices himself to save Anna and her son.

Before his death, Neville hands them the cure for the virus that devastated humanity. Meanwhile, he destroys the approaching Darkseekers using a grenade, ensuring the cure can reach the remaining survivors.

This ending ultimately portrays Neville as a heroic savior rather than a tragic figure misunderstood by a new species.

How the Original I Am Legend Ending Lives On

Although the theatrical version became the official ending, the original conclusion did not disappear entirely. Later, it was included as an alternate ending in the film’s home release. Over time, many fans began appreciating the darker version because it remained more faithful to Richard Matheson’s novel.

Interestingly, discussions around the I Am Legend original ending have resurfaced again as Hollywood develops a sequel to the film. Because of that, the alternate version may play an important role in the franchise’s future direction. Ultimately, the story behind the film’s ending shows how strongly audience reactions can influence even the biggest Hollywood productions.
