Practical Magic 2 Tracking for a Bigger Opening Than the Original!

The Practical Magic 2 Opening could give Warner Bros. a major boost at the box office. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are returning as the Owens sisters, and early tracking points to a stronger debut than the 1998 original.

The sequel is expected to arrive in theaters on September 11, 2026. However, its mixed early reviews could make its box office performance difficult to predict.

Practical Magic 2 Opening Could Surpass the Original

Current projections place the domestic opening for Practical Magic 2 at around $40 million. International markets could contribute another $18 million to $23 million across 77 territories. That would give the movie a projected worldwide opening between $58 million and $63 million. The figure would already exceed the original film’s entire worldwide gross of $51.3 million.

Warner Bros. is reportedly taking a more cautious approach. The studio expects a domestic opening between $30 million and $35 million from approximately 4,000 theaters. However, the studio reportedly believes the movie could outperform those estimates. The original has become a fan favorite over the years, giving the sequel a strong nostalgic advantage.

Why the Sequel Could Have a Strong Debut?

Nostalgia could play an important role in the Practical Magic 2 Opening. Bullock and Kidman are both returning as Sally and Gillian Owens, bringing the central characters back more than two decades after the original film.

The sequel also builds on the Owens family’s established story. It follows the sisters as they confront a dark curse threatening their family. The story is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic, which continues the Owens family’s supernatural saga.

With the original movie’s fan base and the return of its two leading stars, Warner Bros. has several factors working in its favor.

Practical Magic 2 Has Mixed Early Reviews

Despite the promising box office tracking, the critical response has been divided. At the time of writing, the movie holds a 35% Tomatometer score from 54 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Some critics have described the sequel as “pleasantly sweet.” Others have been less impressed, with one review calling it “too drawn out to be a fun hang.”

Jim Schembri wrote:

“Passable, but it’s overlong and cursed with sequelitis…clocks in as a lukewarm, somewhat cynical studio seat-filler that dutifully replicates the mediocrity of the 1998 movie.”

Caroline Siede also criticized the direction of the franchise, writing:

“A ’90s film about women coming together to take out a domestic abuser has become a franchise about how heteronormative romance is the most important thing in a woman’s life.”

The mixed reviews could affect the movie’s performance after opening weekend. Still, strong audience interest could help the film overcome its critical reception.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Return

Bullock and Kidman once again play Sally and Gillian Owens. Their return is one of the biggest reasons audiences may turn out for the sequel. The sisters remain at the center of the story as they face another supernatural threat.

The sequel’s connection to The Book of Magic also allows the filmmakers to expand the world beyond the events of the 1998 movie. That combination of returning stars, familiar characters, and new supernatural stakes could help the film attract both longtime fans and new viewers.

When Does Practical Magic 2 Release?

The Practical Magic 2 Opening is expected to take place on September 11, 2026, when the sequel arrives in approximately 4,000 theaters domestically.

A worldwide debut of $58 million to $63 million would mark a notable start for the franchise. More importantly, it would allow the sequel to surpass the original movie’s entire $51.3 million worldwide theatrical gross in just its opening weekend.

The real test will come after the first few days. If audiences respond more positively than critics, the sequel could turn its strong opening into a longer box office run. For now, Practical Magic 2 appears positioned to give the Owens sisters a much bigger theatrical comeback than their original movie ever managed.
