Russell Crowe and WWE Star Drew McIntyre Reunite for New Historical Fantasy After Henry Cavill’s Highlander!

Some movie partnerships continue well beyond a single project. In this case, two stars who recently worked together on a major fantasy reboot have already moved on to another ambitious production.

Their latest project takes them into a very different world. Ancient kingdoms, hidden communities, powerful armies, and intense physical training all play a part in the story. Meanwhile, filming has taken place under the Spanish sun, with the production recently reaching an important milestone.

Russell Crowe and Drew McIntyre Reunite for The Last Druid

Russell Crowe and Drew McIntyre are reteaming for the historical fantasy film The Last Druid after working together on Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot.

According to Deadline, the film follows a Roman Emperor who discovers a secluded Druid stronghold in the mountains of Caledonia.

Crowe plays a peaceful Celtic elder whose life changes when his family and people face the threat of annihilation. As a result, he must take up arms and fight to protect his community.

The film’s synopsis reads:

“The movie will tell the story of a Roman Emperor who discovers a secluded Druid stronghold in the mountains of Caledonia. A peaceful Celtic elder (Crowe) must take up arms to protect his family and people from annihilation.”

Production on The Last Druid began in May and has recently wrapped after filming in Spain.

What Is The Last Druid About?

The Last Druid is set in ancient Caledonia and centers on a hidden Druid stronghold in the mountains.

The community initially lives away from the outside world. However, everything changes when a Roman Emperor discovers its existence.

Crowe’s character is a peaceful Celtic elder. Yet, when his family and people come under threat, he is forced to abandon his peaceful life.

Consequently, the story will see him take up arms against the forces threatening his community.

The premise gives the movie a strong historical fantasy foundation. It also creates room for action, family drama, and large-scale conflict.

Russell Crowe Plays a Celtic Elder

Russell Crowe takes on the central role of a peaceful Celtic elder.

His character is not introduced as a traditional warrior. Instead, he is pushed into battle by circumstances beyond his control.

That transformation could become one of the film’s key emotional elements. After all, the character is fighting not for glory, but to protect his family and people.

Drew McIntyre Takes on Another Action Role

Drew McIntyre joins Crowe in the film following their work together on Highlander.

The WWE star is no stranger to physically demanding performances. His background also makes him a natural fit for a movie involving weapons training and combat.

McIntyre recently offered fans a glimpse at that preparation by sharing a training photo with Crowe.

The Last Druid Cast Includes Rose Leslie

The cast features several recognizable performers alongside Russell Crowe and Drew McIntyre.

Game of Thrones alum Rose Leslie is part of the ensemble. Stacy Clausen, Pablo Derqui, and Crowe’s son Tennyson are also involved.

In addition, Andreas Pietschmann and Daniel Zovatto have joined the cast.

With several experienced performers involved, The Last Druid has assembled a sizeable ensemble for its historical fantasy setting.

William Eubank Directs The Last Druid

William Eubank is directing The Last Druid.

He also co-wrote the screenplay with Carlyle Eubank and playwright Phil Gawthorne.

The creative team is bringing together historical elements and fantasy storytelling. The result could be a film that balances personal drama with larger battles between the Romans and the Druids.

Moreover, the isolated Caledonian setting gives the story plenty of opportunities for atmosphere and world-building.

Russell Crowe and Drew McIntyre Trained Together

The physically demanding nature of The Last Druid required preparation from its cast.

Drew McIntyre shared a training photo with Crowe, showing the pair apparently working on weapons training for the film.

Crowe later shared the image on Instagram and provided an update on the production.

The actor wrote:

“In the gym with Drew McIntyre. Good lad. Salt of the earth. Just finishing up the shoot on The Last Druid. We have been shooting in Spain since May. It has been two years now since playing Hermann Goering in Nuremberg. The long sweaty days in the beautiful Spanish sunshine have definitely been a great motivator. As I always say, it’s one layer of tissue paper at a time. Consistency is your friend.”

Crowe’s comments also confirm that the production had been filming in Spain since May.

The weapons training photo provides an early glimpse at the physical preparation involved in the movie. Furthermore, it highlights the continued working relationship between Crowe and McIntyre.

The Last Druid Filming Has Wrapped

Filming on The Last Druid began in May and has now wrapped.

The production took place in Spain, where the cast and crew spent several months working on the historical fantasy.

Crowe’s comments suggest that the shoot involved long and physically demanding days.

Now that filming is complete, the movie can move into post-production.

However, an official release date has not yet been announced.

Crowe and McIntyre Went From Highlander to The Last Druid

Interestingly, Russell Crowe and Drew McIntyre went directly from Highlander into The Last Druid.

Their first collaboration came during production on Henry Cavill’s upcoming Highlander reboot.

Production on that movie was delayed after Cavill suffered an ankle injury. The January shoot ultimately extended into June.

Despite the delay, Crowe and McIntyre were able to move from one major fantasy production to another.

Their back-to-back projects make The Last Druid an interesting follow-up to their work together on Highlander.

Russell Crowe Plays Ramirez in Highlander

Crowe has a major role in Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot.

The actor plays Ramirez, a character previously portrayed by Sean Connery in the original film.

His casting therefore connects the new movie to the classic Highlander franchise.

Meanwhile, Drew McIntyre plays Angus MacLeod, the brother of Cavill’s character.

As a result, both Crowe and McIntyre have important roles in the reboot before reuniting for The Last Druid.

When Will Henry Cavill’s Highlander Be Released?

Amazon MGM Studios is targeting a late 2027 theatrical release for Henry Cavill’s Highlander reboot under the revived United Artists banner.

The movie is expected to offer a new take on the classic immortal-warrior story.

Cavill leads the project, while Crowe and McIntyre are part of the supporting cast.

The production experienced delays following Cavill’s ankle injury. Nevertheless, the film remains on track for its planned late 2027 theatrical window.

Although The Last Druid has finished filming, its release date has not yet been announced.

The completion of production is still an important step for the movie. It means the project can now move into post-production before the studio reveals its release plans.

Fans can therefore expect more information about the movie in the future, including potential first-look footage, a trailer, and release details.
