Steven Spielberg Will Produce The Mandela Catalogue Adaptation
According to Deadline, Steven Spielberg is partnering with Amazon MGM Studios to develop a live-action adaptation of the viral YouTube horror series The Mandela Catalogue.
The project is based on the analog horror franchise created by YouTuber Alex Kister. Reports also state that Kister will direct the adaptation after co-writing the screenplay with Tyler Clifton. Additionally, both Kister and Clifton will serve as producers alongside Spielberg, Aaron B. Koontz, and Nick Nesbitt.
Although the movie is still in development, the involvement of Spielberg has already generated significant interest among horror fans.
Steven Spielberg Joins One of YouTube’s Biggest Horror Franchises
Since launching in 2021, The Mandela Catalogue has become one of YouTube’s most successful analog horror series. Across its first two seasons, the franchise has accumulated more than 100 million views.
Moreover, the series is widely regarded as one of the defining works of the analog horror genre, alongside popular projects such as Local 58 and The Backrooms. Its growing popularity has helped establish analog horror as a major source of inspiration for Hollywood adaptations.
Because of its success, many fans have long believed the series had the potential to become a feature film.
What Is The Mandela Catalogue About?
The story takes place in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, where terrifying shape-shifting entities known as Alternates terrorize local residents.
Rather than relying on traditional jump scares, the series focuses on psychological horror. The Alternates are led by a false depiction of the Archangel Gabriel, who manipulates victims through fear and psychological torment in an effort to drive them to suicide.
Furthermore, these mysterious creatures can interfere with computers, televisions, and GPS systems, turning everyday technology into another source of fear. As a result, the series has earned praise for creating a uniquely unsettling atmosphere.
Hollywood Continues Embracing YouTube Horror
The upcoming adaptation reflects Hollywood’s increasing interest in successful online horror franchises. Recently, YouTube creators have begun receiving opportunities to bring their original stories to larger audiences through feature films.
For example, projects such as Backrooms, directed by YouTuber Kane Parsons, and Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, have demonstrated the growing demand for internet-born horror stories. Consequently, The Mandela Catalogue has become the latest franchise to receive the Hollywood treatment.
At the time of writing, the film has not received an official release date. Nevertheless, with Steven Spielberg attached as a producer and Alex Kister leading the creative team, fans will undoubtedly be eager to learn more as development continues.
