New Report Claims the Alien: Romulus Sequel Has Been Shelved
According to a recent report, the Alien: Romulus sequel has been “indefinitely shelved” and may never move forward. The report alleges that director Fede Álvarez was originally expected to return but stepped away from the project last year.
The report further claims that filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott’s involvement became one of the biggest obstacles during development. Allegedly, Scott opposed plans to bring back Michael Fassbender’s David, a character introduced in previous installments.
As a result, development reportedly stalled before the project could move into full production.
Ridley Scott and the David Character Reportedly Caused Creative Tension
One of the most surprising claims involves Michael Fassbender’s return as David. According to the report, Fassbender was willing to reprise the role after reading the script.
However, the report alleges that Ridley Scott did not want another filmmaker handling the character he originally created. Because of that disagreement, plans involving David may have been abandoned.
At this point, neither Scott nor 20th Century Studios has publicly addressed these claims.
Marvel Commitments Could Complicate the Alien: Romulus Sequel
Another challenge reportedly facing the project involves its lead actors. Since the release of Alien: Romulus, both Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson have signed on to major Marvel projects.
Consequently, coordinating schedules for a sequel could become increasingly difficult.
Even so, the actors’ involvement in other franchises does not necessarily mean that a sequel is impossible. Studios often work around busy schedules when a project remains a priority.
Brian Duffield Is Still Developing Another Alien Movie
Despite the troubling report, the Alien franchise is far from finished. Writer Brian Duffield is currently developing a new film set in the same universe.
Interestingly, the report claims that Duffield’s project will “somewhat distance itself” from Alien: Romulus. Nevertheless, Duffield previously shared a post from 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell that appeared to suggest the project still has connections to the 2024 film.
Therefore, the status of the Alien: Romulus sequel remains unclear, and fans may have to wait for an official announcement before drawing any conclusions.
What Fede Álvarez Previously Said About Returning?
Fede Álvarez has previously indicated that directing a sequel was never guaranteed.
He said:
“I don’t think I was ever going to [direct a sequel]. We always knew right when we finished – this is one of those things where you come in, and you do one, and get out.”
Álvarez also explained that many of the directors he admires only made a single installment in the franchise, adding:
“Cameron, Fincher, all those directors I love, they went and did one. Obviously, Ridley created it, he has the right to make a bunch of them.”
Although he suggested someone else could take over, Álvarez revealed that he and his team still wanted to protect the characters they introduced.
“We did want to write it. Honestly, it’s because we love the characters we created, so we want to make sure no one kills them right at the beginning of the next one.”
Alien: Romulus Was a Major Success
Released in 2024, Alien: Romulus received strong reviews from critics and audiences alike. The movie currently holds an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes and earned approximately $350.9 million worldwide.
Because of that success, many fans expected a direct sequel to be announced quickly. However, recent reports suggest that the future of the franchise may be taking a different direction.
